BCSD students at W international

For students, the summer following their high school graduation is a time of transition. Some are getting ready to go off to college, but others are preparing to enter the workforce, and these 27 Berkeley County School District students are a step ahead of the rest.

In March, seniors from five BCSD high schools signed on the dotted line to start working at W International SC, LLC after graduation. Weld Summit, the company's 12-week training program, provides on-site instruction to its participants, as well as a major job placement opportunity within the company.

W International is a metal fabricator located in Goose Creek that makes components for aerospace, automotive, commercial defense and energy markets.

“Them being able to come here and immediately be employed and start employment at $21 an hour, it gives them a career path because as they build a 30-year career here, they can go from welding to being in fitting, to being a lead, to being an instructor, to being an NDT inspector, to being a supervisor,” Michelle Fowler, chief administrative officer, said.

This program further builds off the education students receive in welding CTE classes at many BCSD high schools.
